Setting Health Goals for the New Year that will Stick

The new year is upon us and if you’re like most people, you are thinking of making changes. Hopefully your health is at the top of the list.

Your health has an impact on every other area of your life so it’s something to focus on in the new year. And the good news is that it is one area that you have control over. Even if you have a genetic predisposition to a certain disease, you can be proactive and take preventative action that could substantially lower your risk factors.

When setting your health goals, keep these tips in mind: 

  • Set goals that are realistic and attainable
  • Make goals that are specific, not vague
  • Make goals that are measurable
  • Remember to focus on mental as well as physical health

Many of us set goals too quickly and they fall off the priority list. Here are three sure-fire ways to keep those goals lasting for the long haul:

  • Discover your motivation – identify what motivates you to make a health goal. Maybe you want to be more active. Is that because you want to lose weight, build muscle, or have more energy? Get clear about what you want, and why you want it, and then use that to inspire you throughout your journey.
  • Write goals down– writing goals down makes them more real. Revisit them regularly to hold yourself accountable.
  • Have a Plan – writing a goal down is one thing you can check off your list but ask yourself how you are going to achieve that goal. Maybe you will involve a neighbor in a weekly physical activity in order to stay active or sign up for a weekly Yoga class. Or you will set reminders for the year to make important doctor appointments.

  1. Visit your primary care physician regularly
  2. Ensure you are getting all your preventative screenings done for the year
  3. Revisit your medications with your physician
  4. Reevaluate your health plan to ensure they are right for you
  5. Get adequate sunshine on a weekly basis
  6. Ensure you are getting a sufficient amount of sleep
  7. Focus on self-care
  8. Eat a healthy diet
  9. Be more active
  10. Maintain a healthy weight right for you

Making changes for your health will have tremendous effects on how you feel on a day-to-day. Start thinking about it today and assign a day you will start your new health journey.
